North Face has become squarely for teens and “teens”. I don’t think it was this way 20-30 years ago. Patagonia is for semi-outdoorsy 30s guys and brewery dads who don’t want to spend Arcteryx bucks.

Idk what real outdoorsmen use. Probably brands I don’t even know about. TNF is effectively an outlet mall brand at this point. Patagonia cornered the financial firm logo gear market so much that they stopped allowing it 5 or so years ago. I have been seeming some firm-logged Fjallraven gear.

I’m going to do deep ChatGPT research on this. I think TNF went from prep to urban, although maybe I just got old.

You’re all so hopelessly behind what actual outdoorsy people with gear fetishes are wearing these days.

Poast below what item of clothing you’re looking for and I will point you to a credited and more indy brand.

See e.g., Do you need hiking or tennis shoes? On is out. Icebug’s GoreTex hikers with Boa closures will soon be the new hotness.

Edit to add: I’ve been seeing more Swift canoes down the east coast and even out west in the past few years. They always get admiring looks at the launch.

Eh, you’re simultaneously correct and, sadly, not. Materialistic gear fetishists can and do coexist with the bohemian outdoors set who is all function over form.

The other dirty secret is that all of those groups of bohemians are fashion obsessed in their own peculiar ways. They posture and status signal and compete as hard as any suburban yoga pants mommy.

On and Hoka rose together in popularity but On was pure novelty. People realize that they squeak and stuff gets stuck in the treads, even for their primary suburban lifestyle center and farmers market use case. I don’t think they were ever positioned as an outdoors brand despite the little Swiss flag. Who the fuck is wearing On Clouds to walk up a mountain?

Every UMC or better Boomer I’ve come across in a national park for like the past three years has been wearing their hiking shoes. And yes, they uniformly complain about rocks getting stuck in the treads

I'm surprised the racists haven't come out of the woodworks to point out white people don't wear North Face anymore while Patagonia is still reliably a UMC white people brand. Like Subaru Outbacks. The only people I see still wearing North Face are the Latino cleaners when it's cool in the mornings.

Do remember in the late 1990s when North Face was the de rigueur brand for affluent preppies. It came out of the boarding school cliques. At one point I had two North Face ski jackets, a fleece jacket and a vest. When did it jump the shark? 2005ish? 2008ish? I remember my future MIL picking up a bunch of North Face pullovers on sale and giving it to her daughters and their boyfriends for Christmas and my now wife commenting to me that it was starting to become a bit common.

Patagonia was smart at never letting their clothes turn up at discount retailers.

I like Raab and Kuhl for Alpine hiking.

Your general timeframe is right - sometime mid-W. Not sure if there was an intentional cultural shift in marketing, or if some rap guy started wearing it, but it happened.

i still see some white people wearing northface stuff, but it could be a 20 year old windbreaker or knapsack that is still going strong
