Last night I, along with thousands of others, was summarily fired from my job at the Department of Energy. While the legality of my termination is unclear, and will undoubtedly be litigated for years to come, what I can say is that it was effectuated in the most disrespectful manner possible, and clearly intended to traumatize me and make me regret and question my commitment to public service.

As silly as this may sound, becoming a midlevel bureaucrat was actually the culmination of years of professional striving. Both of my parents spent the majority of their careers in public service, and I saw firsthand that despite the financial tradeoffs, there are few other careers that are as rewarding. I was excited to follow in their footsteps when I started at DOE, and even more excited to spend my days doing the critically important work of rebuilding our country's power infrastructure and industrial base with colleagues who were both brilliant and wonderful human beings. All of that came to an abrupt end last night, and I am still reeling from the loss.

Still, my personal loss is the least of my concerns in this moment. I am more worried about the rapid and unprecedented hostile takeover of our federal government over the past three weeks by those who seek its wholesale destruction, and the erosion of the rule of law that has enabled this perfidy. The rule of law simply cannot endure if the most powerful actors in our constitutional system make no effort to abide by it or hold one another to account.

I have been dismayed by the general lack of alarm about these developments. I know that people are emotionally exhausted, and the thought of four more years of sustained civil outrage feels overwhelming. But if those of us who love this country fail to make our voices heard soon and emphatically, we may never have the opportunity to do so again. Whatever outrage we mustered over January 6, or in the summer of 2020, must be brought to the fore and multiplied many times over. (Those of us whose livelihoods depend on the rule of law should feel even more urgency, if only for pecuniary reasons, since demand for our skills is likely to dry up in a world where the federal register has been replaced by Twitter polls.)

I suppose the silver lining of my new and unexpected jobless status, is that I may now devote myself to what I really feel is the greatest fight of our lives. As an attorney, my most important loyalty is to the rule of law itself. I hope those of you who feel the same will join me in doing everything in our power to save it.
