Sounds like Amex going to bump fee to $1K this fall. I can cop points and cancel next summer. Shrewd?

What is the cr CC now for mid-30s NYC professional?

They upped my gold yearly and I’m thinking of canceling. Sick of this shit. Been thinking of going platinum for 10 years but can’t justify a fuckin thousand dollars just for their scam points. My Chase sapphire gives you better points I feel like. I honestly just wait for them to have a Walmart or Home Depot 10% gift card deal and do that bc my wife buys shit.

platinum only offers bonus points if you're buying hotels and flights through amex's portal, which is always way more expensive than booking direct. like so expensive the 10x points don't even make up for it most of the time. so the card is kind of SPS, except that the lounges are really nice. also there are big perks for booking from their fine hotels list, which are also expensive as shit. the card doesn't make sense for the average person. but if you fly a lot at airports with amex lounges and you regularly stay at $500+/night hotels, it's for you.

also i did this exact thing years ago when the bonus was 100k, plus there was some extra 10x points on grocery stores that i maxxxed out. i downgraded to gold before the renewal hit. it's a shrewd financial move if you don't renew it. 175k points is worth $1,750 minimum, so once the renewal hits you lose.

Cr it really only makes sense if you're wealthy enough to go out of pocket (as opposed to redeeming points) on business class airfare and luxury hotels.

It's also 180 if your firm/employer lets you use your own personal card to make bookings for work travel, but I feel like most companies have tamped down on that.

No points for you. Volume discount$ for the companies that overpay for corporate travel booking platforms that only exist because admins are too dumb/lazy to manage direct bookings and reimbursements.

I was at a firm that allowed this in the 2010s, and point redemption rates were shockingly low compared to today. Flew first or business to Caribbean, Europe, Asia, pretty much wherever I wanted. Reward cards ruined everything by fueling poinTTTflation.

the problem is the amex portal gouges you, so no responsible company would allow you to book through them. and any really big company these days has their own airline and hotel arrangement.

In the mid-2010s, the Citi Prestige card had this insane benefit where you'd get a fourth night free (statement credit) at any hotel you stayed at. I would frequently book 4 night stays for work (sometimes switching hotels after 4 days if it was a longer trip), pay with my Prestige card, get reimbursed by the firm, and then get the value of the 4th night sent back to me by Citi. Literally made like thousands of dollars doing this.

i'm grandfathered in for this benefit. it's capped to 2x per year. you have to book through thankyou.com which sometimes isn't the best price. but i spend it at hotels where it's at least 2k/night so it's still great. i don't think it's a statement credit. they just charge you the 3 nights and cover the 4th. they don't cover taxes though.

yeah, that might have been how it worked re statement credit. this was in like 2015 so beginning to get hazy to remember.

i do remember a big difference was that you didn't have to use thankyou.com, you could call their "concierge" who could book anything even if it wasn't available on the website. at some point they nerfed that and moved it to a 2x a year limit (it was unlimited before which must have just been setting money on fire with flyertalk autists abusing the benefit).

at the same time this card also had this insanely lucrative free golf benefit. i dont even golf, but i remember golfmos talking about how it allowed them to golf for free at PGA-rated courses. they got rid of that pretty quickly.

I don't have either CSR or Amex Platinum. If you generally stick to 1 or 2 hotel chains and maybe a specific airline then you're better off getting their top CC instead of a general card. I have the United Club and Marriott Brilliant. The former gives me access to United lounges and Brilliant has PP lounges. Therefore, I have no need to have another card with lounge access. Sure, I don't get Centurion lounges but that's not the end of the world.

The 175k offer means that you'll have to bother to get the card, get the offer, then cancel/downgrade or keep paying the $1k fee.

take the offer but only keep it for a year unless you find the perks are worth it. it's a shit card for actually earning points so only worth having if you use a lot of the benefits like lounge access.

i gave up the plat because i don't fly enough and i never book hotels. but i sure miss the lounges. i would intentionally look for longer layovers at airports with amex lounges.

That's ok for a free cash back card. But that's not what CSR and Amex Platinum is competing with. You get elite cards for the perks (lounge access, maybe elite status with certain airlines/hotel brands, etc.).
