if you're going to go to maine, youre better off going to bar harbor or camden/rockland if you'd like to be on the ocean, baxter state park if you'd like to hike, portland if you want good food and kooky new england culture, or far northern maine or moosehead lake area if you'd like to do other outdoor recreational activities. bangor really isn't notable for anything other than being the last stop before you hit the really rural areas of northern maine. i was frankly shocked when you said you were going there for a few days because i can't imagine there being anything in bangor you'd actually enjoy.

in the early 00s a few thousand somalians were settled there. it was a crappy place before they arrived and dumping 5-10k somalis in a run-down town of ~35k people certainly didnt improve things. there have been efforts to revitalize the city but its still considered the biggest shithole in maine by native mainers.

on a personal note, lewisttton is noteworthy as the only place in maine i've ever felt unsafe walking around. i stumble around portland alone and drunk at 3 am and have never felt as sketched out as i do in lewisttton. i have a handful of friends who bought houses there because they are so cheap and i constantly hear stories about their cars being broken into, hearing random gunfire in the middle of the night, crack/methheads on every street corner, and just a general feeling of unease/lack of safety everywhere they go. i havent been there in almost 20 years because there's no reason for me to go there. and of course maine's only true mass shooting in history happened there a couple of years ago.
