tech ruined society with predatory pricing

Date: October 5th, 2026 3:05 PM Author: big talking patrolman corner somehow we all think that tech companies charging below cost for 10 years is ackshully good for customers because it gets the tech company's foot in the door on a more efficient service. but that is not true, it's a scam and is anti-human and we all go along with the short-term predation and anti-competitive behavior because we want to be the cool guys supporting tech progress. if you look at the ends as justifying the means you're a satanist and should spend the rest of your life with a digital dildo in ur rectum (you already are) (http://www.autoadmit.com/thread.php?thread_id=5909998&forum_id=2:#50172753) |

Date: October 6th, 2026 8:36 AM Author: Glittery Nowag It sucks. Dynamic pricing has a lot of potential to make the market more efficient but it inevitably will be used to grift people. We should create laws people can't be offered different prices for the same thing.
Adjusting an Uber's price based on supply in demand is just automating ordinary market dynamics. Adjusting it because a user has a low cellphone battery and is likely to be willing to pay more is predatory. |

Date: October 6th, 2026 10:31 AM Author: Glittery Nowag Price controls on supply and demand always fail.
The price of bread fluctuating based on supply and demand can't be stopped. But we shouldn't allow people to use technology to adjust the price of bread for individuals based on how hungry they are. |
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 10:36 AM Author: light principal's office dog poop Dynamic pricing is literally just a zero sum wealth transfer. It provides no "price discovery" utility to "the market." It's just someone with leverage stealing from someone who they have leverage over
You might as well legalize mugging |
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 10:42 AM Author: Glittery Nowag I think it's fine to have dynamic pricing to adjust prices based on supply and demand. For example, if the demand for ubers is high drivers deserve the increase in profit, which will incentive more drivers to enter the market.
The problem is:
1) We shouldn't allow the market middlemen to profit and not the actual providers. This would be like letting the CME reap all the gains from fluctuating commodities prices over the providers.
2) We should prohibit predatory dynamic pricing. There's a difference between charging more to the market because of increased demand and charging more to a single person because you've identified they need it more. Inherently that means charging above the actual market rate. |
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 10:59 AM Author: Indigo mental disorder I think the lesson from modern times is that we should not have complex systems that are difficult to police. Although it's true that technology allows more effective policing of systems, you'll end up in the fight of your life to determine what is simply dynamic versus what is actually predatory to the point that government will allow all but the most egregious examples (and even those if donations and lobbying are hitting right)
|
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 11:25 AM Author: Glittery Nowag But eliminating it entirely is tantamount to price fixing which has a bunch of other problems. If a landlord uses technology to determine the market value of hisnl property that's dynamic pricing.
Ultimately you're right that the problem is rooted in the system overall being captured and unworkable. But then bitching about dynamic pricing is rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. Theres a thousand things more egregious that GC does we haven't stopped, dynamic pricing ia just another cock in the Cornell ketamine gangbang of modern life. |

Date: October 6th, 2026 11:03 AM Author: light principal's office dog poop "I think it's fine to have dynamic pricing to adjust prices based on supply and demand. Uber drives do not make additional money that matches the increase in surge pricing. They make some small added static bonus. Uber pockets the rest. They're just stealing from the customer. Also, there is no accompanying magical increase in supply like you're alluding to. Surge pricing happens in real time
I am surprised you are defending this practice. I have not met a single other person who defends dynamic pricing. It is laughably Molochian. Like a strawman parody of the worst, most destructive excesses of capitalism |
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 11:07 AM Author: Indigo mental disorder The root of much of our evil is the Ferengi-esque perpetual expansion of profit motive that corporations need to pursue. That's exactly the type of shit that drives your uber example and BMW seeking to rent to owners the right to have heated seats and... |
Date: October 6th, 2026 11:22 AM Author: Glittery Nowag We're talking about dynamic pricing in general. Uber taking the profit is problem 1 I mentioned. They are essentially operating as a market middleman pairing consumers with independent contractors. Them stealing drivers profit should be prohibited too, but that doesnt require eliminating dynamic pricing entirely.
Elimonating it entirely would be impossible. From the price of gas to airline tickets, everything with fluctuating pricing is automated in some way. |
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 11:27 AM Author: light principal's office dog poop It would not be impossible at all. The state would just have to actually assert itself over capital. If it is not stopped now, things are going to get really, really bad with AI
People just have to chimp out about it bad enough to get the state to act. Very "odd case," btw, that no "anti-capitalist" "progressives" who "care about regular people" have taken up this extremely low hanging fruit |
|
Date: October 6th, 2026 11:34 AM Author: Glittery Nowag Yes we could just set the price for cabs, food, apartments, etc but that leads to a lot of other issues.
I think there is a line that can be drawn between allowing people to use technology for price discovery for the market and using it against an individual. There's nothing wrong with charging more during rush hour because of higher demand, there is something wrong with charging more than the market rate because a person's cell phone is about to die and they're desperate. |
