When countries retaliated: “They don’t have the cards and will beg to negotiate a trade deal any day now. Trump is a master strategist!”

When countries said they wouldn’t negotiate: “We’re only in this mess because of Biden. Trump is just trying to fix it!”

meanwhile the entire world seems nervous about what america's trade policy is and stock and bond markets are going haywire.

Are they a temporary measure to force countries to the negotiating table to get a better trade deal? Or are they a permanent fixture meant to drive costs higher and force manufacturing back to the states?

Trump seems to be pushing #2 but is clearly unwilling to suffer the pain and financial chaos that would usher in. So we're stuck with a promise he made that he can't keep with no way to back down. And so now the "great deal maker" is negotiating against himself and creating all kinds of exemptions and delays because he's backed himself into an unwinnable corner.

And of course none of the people who are in the cult of Trump see it for what it is and instead claim that his deranged economic views are some kind of master plan and 4-D chess moves.

It's pathetic. You can support him all you want, but this tariff nonsense should be seen by everyone as a complete debacle.

anyone that thinks trump is play 8-D must have been sleeping through his first term. he shoot from the hip and flip-flops constantly. sometimes it works out and it seems like this time he's surrounded himself with smarter and more loyal people, so i have some hope things will turn out fine. but my attitude is essentially just "we'll see what happens." i spend too much time reading about national politics anyway for the minimal impact it has on my life. i'd rather take a hike or grill a burger.

tariffs have been raised until other countries bend the knee. How he gets to the knee bending, I couldn't care less how he does it or how it is or if he flip flops on this that or the other, the only thing that matters is what our trade relations look like a year from now. If they are worse, we Trumpmos will take the L. Until then, stfu and let the master play the game.

i think the tariffs are going to turn out to be a disastrous turning point for the united states. not sure trump could even effectively back down now. china is pissed off and seem intent on getting back at us.
