Wonder how things would be different if the first / eastern settlements were on the California coast. And stretched out into the desert (or would they)?

Places like Maine being added as states only like 100 years later. Florida some weird Baja type place hanging off the west coast

They had access to the coast early on. Columbus landed in modern day Panama and was only a day's walk from the Specific Ocean. There were several efforts to navigate the coast but the maps they produced were shitty and the indians there were tough

My hypo is more about the differently evolving American culture and history if it began in what we call west coast, and took time to explore and discover what we call east coast o

I'm saying Europeans were sailing to the west coast before they got north of Florida. Some French guy tried to sail up the St. Lawrence river but he never even made it to the great lakes, had no idea they were even there

the defining feature of california is that it is on the pacific, this would change nothing, california would just be florida and the carolinas

idk man, its just a thought. Like you can conceive of the "pacific" being flipped around, so somewhere past bermuda the ocean becomes pacific-esque and the north american land mass was also flipped with its defining weather, geography, features.

and pilgrims were landing in oregon and george washington was setting up camp in the valley, and nobody bothered to find New York Harbor for a long time, etc.

Im not asking you also to believe there were dragons and such

The pacific has yuge waves and rocky coasts. Europeans wouldn't have been able to set up so many ports and shipyards. That's why the Spanish could sail along the coast but never traveled into California much

"Sir Francis Drake explored and landed in California in 1579, during his circumnavigation of the globe. He landed in what is now Point Reyes, claiming the area for England and naming it Nova Albion. This occurred during a period of heightened tensions with Spain, prompting Drake to seek new trade routes for England."

anyway, if the continent were flipped, there was less fertile lands and then there were impassible mountains and deserts.

And by all accounts the Indians were wealthier, better organized and fought like total motherfuckers. We didn't finish off the Apache until the 20th century
