I think a big part of it is that they get you to drive a long ways and then you're there and you spend a bunch of money in the store on baked goods and foodstuffs. You feel committed. There aren't very many of them and they're far away and they're always packed. And they probably have a pretty high dollar value per person who walks through the door. Just dumbass shit. Branched into other similarly stupid, pointless crap with folksy humor on it.
But he got the Cracker Barrel contract and they sold his shit in the "general store" they have in the front of their stores.
