The door to wealth creation is never closed. You're just thinking of one or two stocks no differently from gambling. But we did go through a remarkable epoch of stock wealth creation. My investments returned more last year than my salary + bonus, and my net worth is scaling up rapidly, all thanks to market gains. Which could disappear, of course, it's paper money. But even with a couple of flat/downish years, if the long term trend of the market is upwards, those of us who entered 2019 with comfortable investment portfolios have become substantially wealthier and leapfrogged far ahead of people just a few years behind us. And that's where the gap between the haves and have nots is emerging. But there's a lot of people in the halves. Lots and lots of middle aged households in their 40s ands with decent UMC incomes who are now sitting on multiple millions in retirement and investments. People who live in boring colonials who have fat 401ks. Tempting to say the bottom half of America will never catch up in a meaningful way, it's the California real estatification of America.
