no; the guidance counselor would usually steer you to the "right" school, which was often an ivy, but not always.

family connections mattered, alumni connections mattered. but if you were just too dumb, they'd often find ways to push you away from the better schools in order to protect their own reputations with the university adcoms.

Wasn't exactly that easy. You should read a book called The Chosen. It is an excellent examination of admissions over the years at HYP.

The other thing that struck me about reading the book was that the Ivies still had that inclination toward social engineering, but rather than focusing on enrolling minorities, those energies were focused on enrolling deserving whites from modest backgrounds across the heartland (non-Jewish whites of course). The economist James Tobin is listed as one example of the white Protestant masses who was lifted up by Yale, given a nearly free education, and turned into a great scholar.

They were still roughly ranked in that order, but admissions were obviously much less of the circus that they are now. I suspect one of the main reasons was that there just wasn't as much to gain by going to HYP in the 50's. We had a much, much more middle class economy back then. Wall Street had been knocked on its ass in the Depression and never fully recovered. Silicon Valley existed, but there were no start-up IPO's and VC was in its infancy. There was much less of a lottery to win, and blue collar people often did as well economically as guys working in respectable office jobs.

I don't know about the use of silicon specifically, but the SF area has been a center of innovation since the Navy started developing radio technology there in the early 1900's.

eh...kind of but not really "ranked" in the way we think of today. an Andover Man was matriculating to Yale like his father and grandfather before him. the idea of picking Harvard because wall street brokerages might go deeper into the class there or MIT because of its superior STEM credentials would never enter his mind. maayyyyyybe he'd consider breaking rank for Princeton since they had a lot fewer jews and catholics at the time.

also iirc Columbia had the largest endowment of any school in the world up until the late 60s or early 70s.

lol. supposedly ethnically catholic F. Scott. Fitzgerald was once humiliated at Princeton when during an eating club event a senior Chad-ish member from PE overheard him trying to pass off his secondary school, St. Paul ACADEMY in St. Paul Minnesota, as THE St. Paul's SCHOOL to some girl from Barnard or Brearley, or whatever and Exonian Chad drunkenly called him out in front of the entire Cottage Club.

this, along with being cut after one day of tryouts with the football team is said to have contributed to his becoming a weird introverted loner who just sat around writing little stories and failing out of school by the time he shipped off to WWI. the cross-generational similarities between him and pensive are actually quite striking, apart from the fact that he fought in a war, had some talent, experienced moments of success and recognition during his lifetime, and got into Princeton.

Keep in mind also that the Ivies were historically affiliated with certain religious denominations. Princeton was Presbyterian, Penn was Quaker, Harvard and Yale were Congregational/Unitarian, etc. Brown was the Baptist-affiliated Ivy. So, for example, John D. Rockefeller's son went to Brown because the family was Baptist (admittedly this was before the 1950's).
