Minute 1: Slipping the VHS on the counter to the blue-poloed teenager who greets you loudly.

Minute 2: bee-line for the new releases in the back.

Minutes 3-12: a slow walk across the back aisles, methodically looking up and down the shelves, occasionally flipping the boxes to read them. Select 2 or 3 possibilities.

Minute 13: find companion; share 2 or 3 possibilities; get immediately vetoed.

Minute 14: view their possibilities; veto all of them.

Minute 15: verify that the one new release you REALLY want still is not in stock.

Minute 16: go back to front counter; ask about that new release. [N.B.: in advanced stages, this will result in a coupon for a free movie.]

Minutes 17-21: start down the comedies aisle.

Minutes 22-26: start down the action aisle.

Minutes 27-31: rapidly glance at other aisles.

Minute 32: linger in front of a Red Shoe Diaries box while acting like you're not.

Minute 33: companion offers a comedy; you veto.

Minute 34: you go back to one of your original new release selections; companion caves, holds it for a moment.

Minute 35: bump into neighbor who saw that popular new release in the theater and LOVED it, but it's still not in stock.

Minutes 36-37: continue conversation with neighbor while glancing about shelves.

Minute 38: "Do we have popcorn at home?"

Minute 39: companion offers second movie as compromise pick; you reluctantly agree and will rent two.

Minutes 40-42: slow walk to front because you still glance at shelves in case you miss something.

Minutes 43-44: wait in line.

Minute 45: you're about to checkout when the teenager says, "Oh, and this movie just came in." You look at your companion; you look at the two VHSes in your hands; and you have a decision to make....

Not being able to look/rent/buy media in brick and mortar stores is one of the super sucky things that internet has created. There was a charm with Blockbusters, Tower, Borders etc. that is simply not there with Amazon or Netflix. You went out, bumped into people, perhaps met your life partner browsing the Military History section. Now even when people do go out, they have those dumb ear phones on.

You would have to be quite dense to construe my post as referring exclusively to the brands mentioned therein. Which also means that you missed the essence of the post. The point is getting the fuck out of your house (or in your case basement) and seeing/interacting with people. I don't care if it's Subway Jared's porn store or whatever indie place you got your media from.

CR

There'sa certain "hunter" aspect you feel when you go out and have to HUNT for the movie you wish to see.

You understand the TRUE FEELING OF FAILURE when the movie you wanted to see is OUT.

I suppose. My point was mostly geared to the getting-out-and-seeing-people aspect of it. For instance if you were going to blockbuster or the CD shop or whatever, you would be forced to change, perhaps straighten your hair a bit, pop a mint in your mouth. You would have to say hi to the postman/neighbor/doorman. You would see people out and about. Strollers with babies. Dogs. You would have to interact with the clerk. You might bump into someone you know in the aisles or strike up a conversation with someone random. People don't realize it but this is living. This is normal. We are social creatures. This is what makes us happy.

Ever wait around the store for like an hour on the OFF CHANCE someone would bring back the movie you wanted? Then on the off chance someone does, you beg the clerk to let you rent it even though they haven't "processed" it yet.

What kind of poor only gets two movies at Blockbuster? Cop three VHS (one new release, one older action flick, and one wildcard 80's horror movie) AND two video games minimum on Friday after school. Blow through them all by late Saturday afternoon because you instantly watched the new release, you half ass watched the action movie while you played one video game (on your sister's 16 inch tube TV/VCR unit that you stole from her room to put next to your bigger TV in your room) most of the time, and the horror movie is totally unwatchable, and the other game is gay as balls and you didn't play it for more than 15 min. ***Beg*** your mom to take you back to get dat fresh Saturday night stack and be like YNY when she obliges.

Remember how the clerk would slide the movie over a sensor so the alarms wouldn't go off?

remember rifling through the "just returned" pile behind the counter, the ones that hadn't been checked in yet, to see if the game you wanted was there, and the elation when it was?
