This dude was so cold he sold coke to his drug addict mother. That shit really saddened me because that was his reality. He was almost certainly prenatally exposed to cocaine or crack, never knew his father, had 3 or 4 older siblings from different fathers who beat the shit out of him from time to time, initiated him into street life and got him selling drugs by the time he dropped out of 8th grade. When I met him he was probably 24-25, having spent the last 10+ years slinging coke around NYC, in and out of Rikers, wanting to better himself but never having the capacity to elucidate a vision of a better life let alone the ability, skills and knowledge to improve his situation (e.g. reading & writing). I did my best to offer him guidance as he always reflected on my life and apartment in gracious terms - he admired that I made enough money to live in a doorman building and have decent furniture.
He wasn't a thug, he was sophisticated enough to exclusively sell to mostly white and Asian young professionals in Manhattan - a coveted and relatively low-risk market in his world - and he genuinely wanted to improve and legitimize his standing in society but was woefully unequipped. I thought of him recently and googled his cell phone to see what might come up. I was surprised to find his name online and absolutely devastated when I googled it, to find several articles from last summer detailing his murder in Brooklyn. |
