That was the highest and best use for him. It's what launched his career. Casual visitors to the observatory would meet him and become overwhelmed by his charisma. His reputation spread through word of mouth like that for many years. People were taking friends and family to the observatory to get tours from "this really cool guy who works there." Eventually some TV producers toured the observatory.

maybe but the fact you think he is "best suited" for doing PR for a planetarium means you don't think he merits being considered a great scientist either.

Apologies, NSAM was right. He worked at an observatory before going to NY. times article from 1993

Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Star Rises at Mauna Loa Observatory Aspiring astrophysicist impresses tourists and lands a prestigious role at New York’s Hayden Planetarium.

Mauna Loa Observatory, nestled among the pristine landscapes of Hawaii’s Big Island, has long been a hub for astronomical research and discovery. Recently, it has also become an unexpected launching pad for a rising star in the world of astrophysics: Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

At just 34 years old, Tyson has been dazzling visitors with his charismatic and deeply insightful tours of the observatory. His passion for the cosmos is evident in every word, leaving tourists inspired by his vision of exploring the universe. With his magnetic personality and knack for translating complex scientific concepts into accessible and engaging narratives, Tyson is quickly making a name for himself among both visitors and colleagues.

Rachel Schwartz, a tourist visiting the observatory with her parents from Scarsdale, NY, shared her experience: “Neil’s tour was incredible. He made the stars feel closer, like they weren’t just distant points of light but part of a story we’re all connected to. I can’t stop thinking about what he said about the universe and our place in it.”

Tyson’s reputation has now earned him an extraordinary opportunity: a position at the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. The news marks a triumphant return for Tyson to his hometown, where he will take on the role of education coordinator. There, he plans to use his talents to engage wider audiences and foster a love for astronomy, bringing a fresh and inspiring perspective to the planetarium’s programs.

“I’m thrilled to begin this next chapter,” Tyson stated in a recent interview. “The cosmos has always been my greatest teacher, and I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with others in a city I hold close to my heart.”

From the volcanic heights of Mauna Loa to the bustling metropolis of New York, Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s journey is a testament to the power of passion and the profound impact of storytelling. As he takes the next step in his career, one thing is clear: the universe has no limits for this rising star.

He's been more candid about the state of physics than Alex Filippenko since JWST pics came in, and he doesn't even have tenure at Caltech.

EDIT: Berkeley. It figures

what does that have to do with you agreeing that NDT is more a spokesperson than an generational scientific talent? but simply being too stupid to understand what people criticize about him.

It's a false dichotomy. We know jack shit about physics and he does a good job of showing us the outer boundaries of our knowledge. He's like a 1st grader lecturing kindergartners on how to read.

the criticism surrounding him is libs making him out to be an english phd in your analogy, stupid.

NSAM: prole tell: shitting on kamala because she worked at mcdonalds. she was perfectly suited for that.

GUN: no, we're shitting on her because libs make her out to be a quality POTUS candidate. she is well suited for mcdonalds. also, she didn't even work there.

NSAM: she's smarter than you.

GUN: ok? that's nonresponsive.

NSAM: it's a false dichotomy.

All that does is disprove another theory. Useless except as a potential time saver for future physics profs (it isn't, they teach discarded theories all the time).
