This is a wild one.
I went to US to do a summer internship job working as a bartender (I’m actually from SE Europe). I worked in a hotel in Anchorage, Alaska when one night an older dude walked in the bar when I was closing. I made him a cocktail and we talked for a while, he seemed to like me. He came back to see me the next day too. He jokingly said that he wants to hire me. I checked him out on linkedin and it turned out he’s a CEO of an AI startup based in San Jose and some big name company just invested real money in them.
I didn’t take it seriously until he shot me a message couple of weeks later and invited me to meet him in Las Vegas. I was contemplating if I should and everybody called me crazy, but in the end I went. He paid for everything, showed me a really good time and was really genuinely good. I never felt he had a hidden agenda (btw. I’m a 190cm white male and he’s an old short indian dude).
On the third day of our trip he offered me a job, gave me an above average salary and I worked for him remotely from Europe. This is even more impactful because at the time I was kinda lost (finishing a college that didn’t interest me and started to code but quickly gave up). PM was actually a position I found myself in.
I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity that guy gave me. It changed my life for the better.
