For the majority of my twenties and thirties I identified as agnostic. My parents were moderate Muslims who taught me the basics of Islam like praying, fasting, charity, etc., but didn't force me to do anything after I reached the age of about 14. They were disappointed when I told them I was agnostic, but we didn't really talk about it much after that. I'll never forget, my mom once said to my dad, "I know he's going to come back one day."
And that's actually what has happened in the last few years. I still don't pray, though I want to start again. I'm teaching my kids the basics, like my parents taught me. Islam to me is about community, about having people in this world who understand you like you understand yourself. It's about tribe, about making sure my kids understand who they are on a genetic level. They will not have the benefit of growing up next to other Muslims, so I see it as my duty to pass our roots onto them. I also see us underdogs, as a misunderstood people in this country, and I've always identified with underdogs. Hopefully I can live a good, productive life to chip away at that impression.
But beyond that, I don't care. I think people should do what's best for them. I think apostates are sometimes misguided, like I was, and others have had their own negative experiences with Muslims that have turned them away from religion entirely. But I think they should do whatever they please and they certainly do not deserve to be murdered.
