Although I believe you, I find this surprising.
Depending on your specific origin point and destination, and the specific time of day, it is often SIGNIFICANTLY faster to take the subway in MFH. (Eg. going from UES or UWS down to SOHO during rush hour)
Even a filthy mud-creature thudnerdome subway ride is preferable to taking a 25 minute longer trip in a car. Obviously that's a matter of preference, but time always has to be considered most precious.
