Yeah it was a little irritating to have geezers like bowden and paterno--let alone fucking mack jones and philip fulmer--having infinity job security during "down decades" of performance, but it created these men as Institutions for institutions' sake, and that both gave cover to the universities (who value their prestige in a way that's qualitatively different from an nfl team) to not have to go on searches that could very well end in embarrassment in bad markets/years for hiring, and also built the geezers an unearned rep that was itself useful for recruiting purposes. |
