That article reads like it was sponsored by Apple. It's well known that these companies gouge carmakers on licensing fees, because Toyota refused to deal with Google for YEARS after every other automaker made Android standard. I think 2021-ish was the first year you could use Android in a Toyota.

EDIT: confirmed it was not there in 2020

“ Today, I’m talking with Baris Cetinok, who has one of the longest titles of any person we’ve had here on Decoder. He is, officially, General Motors’ senior vice president, software and services, product management, program management, and design.”

I have a Garmin GPS that lets me send addresses from my phone via bluetooff. It also gets live traffic updates and has much better lane guidance than Apple or Google Maps. It doesn't track my shit or upload any of my POIs to the cloud, and it gives me faster routes that Google about 50% time, since Google Maps chooses the most "fuel efficient" route by default, not the fastest. I can also take it with me when I travel abroad and I've used it in Europe and Latin America without issue. If you don't want to pay for foreign maps you can download pirated copies and load them from a microSD card.

This also lets me get cars with base model stereos that can be upgraded. Even if the head unit can't be replaced, you can throw one of these bad boys in an empty space behind the glove box and instantly improve any sound system:

  Works with new cars:

It's only 4-channel, but you can use it for your 4 biggest speakers and let the head unit drive the smaller ones.

New cars have a lot of cabin noise because the sound deadening material they used in the 1990s adds significant weight. That's why I always snag a box of Dynamat and do the door panels all around:

It really does weigh a fuckton though. If you do the rear hatch in a SUV plus all the doors it will put a noticeable dent in mileage. Some people do the floors and trunk but dat too heavy 4 me

I've only used it in rentals, but it basically just takes your compatible phone apps and puts them in your car.

So instead of using the shitty Volvo navigation app, you can just open Google Maps on your phone and it'll display on the car. Same thing if you're listening to an Apple Podcast, it displays in the car (and you can use the car display to control your phone in these apps too).

So basically, the car display becomes an extra screen for your phone to use maps/podcasts/texting/phone/spotify/etc.

I think most proprietary car software will probably do something similar, but its obviously better if Apple/Android are creating the software versus fucking BMW.
