It actually did seem useful to learn passively for 20 minutes a day. I also never fully grasped how to turn up the difficulty. Felt like I was stuck on a low level forever. Too repetitive. I did French for several months before we took a trip there, still struggled quite a bit with normal pleasantries.
If you actually want to seriously learn something you need to spend more time than a gamified 10-20 minutes a day.
If I actually wanted to learn chess I should use a computer program that analyzes your games and tells you which moves were mistakes, alas, what Duolingo has going for it is that the interface is fairly fictionless.
Its a cheap plastic toy.
