The Tall candidate bides his time. Reagan was unbeatable so they threw Mondale to the wolves. Not every election is "designed" to be won imo. There are at least some backroom deals where it's like "ok we'll Lose this one and you'll team up with us to destroy the white working class."
The otherwise-excellent candidate who's like 5`9`` just does non-elected shit like Cheney and Rumsfeld and doesn't humiliate himself by trying to run. The sub-6`00`` guys who run are disproportionately idiots who think they can buck the trend. The excellent Short candidate just doesn't want to experience the ignominy of potentially being labeled "Little Marco" for the rest of his life just doesn't go for it, so Short candidates are disproportionately kind of shit. Cheney could've gotten a hair transplant and ran and maybe won and it'd be long odds, but a competent Short candidate would do better than you would expect if they threw caution to the wind. |
