it's totally forgotten, that whole period. the movie 'Kids' and My So Called Life kind of hint at the desolation of that cohort, but it's so much more.

I think it's a class thing. Dawson's Creek reminded me much more of my high school years than My So-called Life. In the 90s the dissolution hadn't hit the upper middle class yet.

"CEO" of a printing business of which her husband is the only other employee, and part-time at that.

These people were being dramatic over nothing iirc. David Foster Wallace killed himself because of “consumerism.” Like 50% of the adult men I know have like no material possessions. It’s just not that big of a thing. And even if it is no cares. Would he rather everything be in the Cloud? No Consoles? No hardware?

He would’ve seen Saturn and all Consoles as rank consumerism. Especially after 32x. He LOATHED Consooming.

I really don't understand what these idealists and idealogues hope to achieve. Yes, existence absolutely sucks and suicide is a perfectly legitimate response. But there's no way we can band together to make it "better".

"Consumerism" is just a sidenote in the long list of Things That Should Not Be afaik. It exists because we exist. We are the problem, not consumerism. If we somehow dispelled consumerism, now what? We just sit around in the wilderness and whittle sticks without being compensated for it? Everyone just fucks and then watches their brood die from malnutrition and starvation like in Africa or Alabama? Or are we supposed to be purely intellectual beings who communicate exclusively in Liberal Arts jargon about how all of this is somehow meaningful? Try to be reasonable ffs.

Long live Magnus.
