very first job was a corpo job in mfh
jewish guy was assigned as my "mentor". he was just like the stuff i wrote about it in "dinner with andre" thread. Fake goy name, two first names. Taller and almost passing. Neurotic and sarcastic and quippy
one day i didnt wear a belt. I was 22 and didnt know shit about corpo-wear i guess. He grabbed my elbow and tried to parade me around office, announcing "this kid has no belt"

When I first started out, I had people that would try to take advantage of me and get me to do their work for them.
After awhile, I built relationships that have lasted and those folks have looked out for me, I guess.
I sacrificed a lot when I was younger and look where it has led me.

After boomers became old enough to be “mentors,” the protege is always female I guess.
doodikoff thought he had a mentor but it was just a boomer who was like “how’s your Firm you started in march 2020 going, champ?”

yeah
he was a good dude. he probably got more out of it than me - i was a stellar employee - but he did a lot out of genuine goodwill to help me and do what was best for me

yes. had a couple dudes who really helped me out when i was young and stupid and didn't understand the world. thankfully they are all still alive and we talk regularly.
hopefully the younger guys i deal with now will in turn help me stay in touch after i've mostly powered down to read books all day.

Lol no. I come from stock that is smart but blue collar at best and outright criminal at worst. I didn't even know to apply for college until people were talking about getting rejected or accepted in high school
I have mentored a ton of people now, though, including fellow c-level executives. The world is fucking crazy

love this thread about bros (occasionally) helping bros.
i had guys who i learned a lot from, but i never managed to turn it into the quasi-son, golden child thing that you see some guys pull off. which was my fault, because when i was younger, i had a bit of an anti-authoritarian streak, would be the junior complaining about bullshit deadlines or work/projects that made no sense, would sometimes correct the boss, and am too autistic to let certain things go.
maybe the guy i learned the most from was close in age and more of a colleague/slight boss, with more natural charisma than i've ever seen - seeing that up close was an education.
and honestly now, i've got a senior lady boss with a super high-powered background, who overtly talks about "mentorship" and mentoring me specifically, and it's great. even though xo consensus is that lady bosses are to be avoided, she's 180 so far and seems to like me.
