Just imagine saying to someone that faith in Christ isn't enough for salvation. That God picks some people at random to save and others not.

No one has been able to hang on to 5 point Calvinism for long. The Dutch tried, but it was too much of a bummer, so Arminius came along and said OK we'll keep most of Calvinism but we're scrapping predestination. The Puritans similarly swung extremely far in the other direction. They went from only a tiny handful of people are saved to everyone is saved no matter what they do.

Calvin came up with predestination because in the Bible God randomly blesses some people and not others. And he thought Jesus was explicit that he only died for the sins of his flock, not everyone. But 99% of Christians don't believe this anymore. So you can try! But most don't make it very far.

Actually if you look back at history, early America, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are all very similar. Calvinists who were industrious, built high trust societies, got insanely wealthy, and then lost the capacity to be super judgy of others and enforce their strict religion. They all became universalists after they became successful. No different than libs today.

Skimming this Weber entry I like the part about WASP austerity. They worked hard AND rejected materialism. That's how they got so rich. They were AFRAID of using their hard earned wages for anything other than stored investment. They believed that dollars beget more dollars, and if money is the scorecard of salvation you'd be insane to waste a penny that could go towards growing your chip stack. Amazing. Now think about how a Puritan-descendant like Abigail Johnson owns the entire stock market lol. Makes perfect sense.

Also Weber's incredible dings on Lutheranism for caring way too much about the holy spirit and not GETTING THE FUCK TO WORK and saving money. Ljfl.

I do kinda like the Calvinist work ethic thing just reminds me of my dad and how I was raised.
