In Illinois, Hispanics were less than 9% of the voting-eligible population, and Hispanics have lower voter turnout so they were probably only 7-8% of all votes cast. In New York they were 12.5% of eligible voters, and maybe 10% of all votes cast. Romney lost Illinois by 17 percent and New York by 28; swinging 70% of the Hispanic vote his way wouldn't have been enough.
California would be closer, but even there, Hispanics were only 25% of eligible voters and once again a lower % of actual turnout. If they were 20% of voter turnout that's not enough to win it for Romney I believe. |
