That's the most plausible part of the story, since Utah police are saying they recovered a rifle and several rounds in that caliber. If the kid was smart, he would have deliberately mischaracterized it in his messages to the roommate, in order to create reasonable doubt and boost his odds of acquittal.

No, I've thought about it. For starters, it would be really easy for him and the roommate to deny the authenticity of fake texts. His actual behavior since his arrest is consistent with evidence we've been presented. He didn't say shit and didn't even have an attorney at his arraignment
