Why is GRAND SEIKO such a divisive brand to watchmos?

Half the people claim that GS's horological advancements blow Rolex away
The other half argue that it's a glorified quartz watch

I think they are divisive for more reasons than just the spring drive and quartz focus.
1. They are japanese and not swiss.
2. Some people look down on non-mechanical movements. I think this is silly and it's mostly guys who like to feel like they have an expertise in something. The spring drive is a cool and satisfying innovation. If I were to buy a GS, I think I'd prefer it to be a spring drive movement because that's what sets them apart from other watch brands even if they produce other high quality movements.
3. Their designs are boring. The unique feature of GS is their meticulous finishing and details on the dials. To me, most of them look the same just with differences in color/texture on the dials. I'm probably not going to spend a lot of time looking at the watch with a magnifying glass, so I'd be paying a premium for something I won't really get to enjoy.
4. Branding. It's a luxury priced item that shares a name with a budget brand. No one outside of watch nerds will be impressed with your $8,000 GS.

I like all their models except not sure about their sports watches.
They also probably do too many dial variations with ex post rationalized names like the purple frost that forms on the banks of Lake Oouri in the Mid-Late-Earl Winter microseason.

What size case do you prefer?
I like something less than 40mm and I thought the SBGA and SLGA (evolution 9) were just a bit too angular and clunky for me at 40mm given they are so elegant otherwise.
But then they released the SLGB003 and a new purple one which I think is 37mm but seems a bit dainty.
