The rabbi said that he had served in the military and that one of his sons was serving in Gaza, studying religious texts there every day. But the boys responded to his question with mockery, saying they were going to “run right now to the army” before jogging away.
The rabbi said many ultra-Orthodox refused to serve out of fear, partly of becoming a casualty but also of being tempted by the military’s secular culture.
