as far as narrative goes, MGS V is shit even by MGS kooky standards overall. even the "finished" chapter 1 has very little plot. they basically went overboard in the other direction after MGS4 was like 60% cutscenes.
that said, even though the world design feels a bit bland, the gameplay is utterly 180. it's the most fun I've had playing a video game in a long time, and one of the few true successes of the open world model IMO. there are way too many redundant side ops, but the world makes sense: each place is basically a staging area for a mission, nothing more. you can roam, but there arent 5000 points of interest or whatever to visit. plus FOB missions are tough as fuck if you raid bigger bases; just as the main game gets too easy, you can dive into online shit and get your ass kicked without careful planning.
and even though the plot is sps over all, there are a few (emphasis few) missions which are real high points. one in particular is maybe the most brutal 20 minutes I've ever played in a video game.
never felt so polarized playing a game. it nailed the one thing that eludes pretty much any AAA game these days, which is gameplay. and one specific mission is some of the greatest direction and horror I've ever experienced playing a game. but overall the plot sums to "basically nothing, then fuck you".
I won't put it down for a while though, because the 180 gameplay makes it so you will actually fire up the game many times after you're done with the plot.

cr, this is basically every ubisoft game. for instance farcry has pretty good core gameplay, but why no, I don't want to run around the map to hunt a random fucking animal or collect plants so I can craft a weapon in a shooting game.
witcher 3 does it right, where there's a bunch of side stuff, but it's clearly optional and the game is loaded with enough meaningful content that you don't really care. more importantly, any stuff you need to craft/make weapons gradually appears more as the game goes on, so I don't need to do a bunch of pointless shit because I want a shinier sword, I already have the materials.
witcher 3 is one of the few games I instantly replayed just because it was pure fun, and MGS V is one of the few games I'll keep pulling out periodically because the core gameplay is amazing. it's utterly bizarre that Kojima managed to damn near perfect the one thing that always eluded him, but shit the bed on story. even a weird incomprehensible story would be better than none at all, with a SHIT twist to cap it off.

I am only basing my opinion based on watching 3 or 4 hours of walkthroughs in the background while working, but Fallout 4 just seems to be Fallout 3 all over again. Maybe it feels different when playing, but it just looks exactly the same. Roam around. Meet people. Accept quest. Kill bad guys and find widget. Check a thousand boxes for ammo and caps.
I'm still going to buy it after #codevember, but I'm so far not impressed.
THANKS BETHESDA!
