Yeah, I did a multi-year Duolingo effort before showing up and I honestly can't imagine how people travel through Mexico without a decent amount of Spanish. While there is sporadic English (sometimes in bizarrely unexpected places, like a random gas station attendant), overall the level of English knowledge is near 0.
