why do you think the prior owner sold it? Same shit happened at the local bagel shop near me.
Everything costs 40% more and they skimp on cream cheese and water down the coffee.
I have no idea how steakhouses stay in business with choice ribeyes costing nearly $30/pound.

Former owners were older, perhaps that had something to do with it.
I actually don't have a problem paying a "fair" price, I just think more and more places are just openly price gouging and the ethos of customer service has disappeared concurrently as cheerful young people are replaced by more bitter older people. I think $15 after tax was a fair price for the sandwich I used to purchase, and while margins were lower they likely made up for it in volume and a loyal customer base that provided regular recurring revenue. They were in business for 30+ years so clearly the model was working.
There is a lot to be said about generosity--adding extra sauce, allowing liberal substitutions, giving ample portions and charging for it accordingly. And the previous regime embodied those traits. Now you have someone trying to capitalize on the goodwill they had created, not just by raising prices to this degree but also charging for all those extras, and it's not going to work, it never does no matter how many stupid professional photographs you take to plaster all over Yelp and DoorDash.
