And then of course it split up more with their sons

Could all of this been avoided had Charlemagne sat his son Louis down and said “let’s do some basic simple division math to show you why primogeniture is the only way”? Possibly

Charlemagne came from a culture and society that did not have primogeniture. They split holdings among the sons. Yes, it would have been better for him to start a new practice of inheritance, but it would have required him to buck generations of tradition.
