It's one of my favorite books. The mystery and gravitas of a poor guy swept up by genuine wealthy aristocrats is a fun adventure. It's a common theme in British literature, the obsession with declining nobility. The quasi gay stuff is whatever but it's only half the book. It's never explicit.
The best part of the book is when he falls for the sister. Incredible literary romance. And it's all going good but she dumps him out of Catholic guilt. It's 180.
The ending I don't care for but I never stop thinking about the phrase 'a twitch upon the thread'.
Overall it's romantic and mysterious and a fun adventure. The part where Julia breaks up with Charles is soul crushing. It reminded me so clearly of my first girlfriend it made me feel all those emotions over again. My ex looked like Hayley Atwell too and was Catholic. That shit was too real. Left me sobbing. I think I liked the movie version more than the book. I really like busty brunettes. Like a lot. Somewhat of a fixation in my life.
