For some of them it's all they have, they never really developed real hobbies or interests and trying to develop a new way to live would make them miserable.
But a lot of them just hate being around their wife.

Last month, many were stunned when Robert M. Morgenthau, who finally retired at 90 after 35 years as Manhattan’s district attorney, announced that he had not only joined the corporate firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, but also had a big office on the 31st floor renovated for him (and his longtime personal assistant, who went with him).
But Mr. Morgenthau is hardly alone. The legal profession, more than many other fields, seems to carry a work-until-death ethic. At Wachtell, where he is “of counsel,” Mr. Morgenthau so far has been putting in the same long hours he did as a prosecutor, though much of his time has been taken up with public appearances and award ceremonies.

There's a certain breed of man who defines himself entirely by his profession. i think this is likely more prevalent in boomers than gen X and millenials. They don't cultivate interests or relationships and thus depend on being a lawyer for their identity and to give their days meaning or purpose.
Were they to stop working entirely, what would they do? There's only so many lunches you can have and places to travel. Their children are grown and no one else needs them or has any reason to interact with them. Working gives them purpose, and I think everyone needs that.
It's a reminder for me to pursue interests outside of work so that I don't find myself putting on a suit and going into an office in my 70s.

"Their children are grown and no one else needs them or has any reason to interact with them."
This is a sad, but true point. It certainly isn't for the money anymore since they don't have a family to maintain anymore.
Nobody is rushing to Dad to solve their issues anymore. All they have left is the relevancy from their practice.
Without that, they're just an old man that the world has passed by.

It took me a while to understand. Like the retired judges on recall making like $100/day. Why on earth would anyone do that?
I've spent the last 11 years being needed by little people who depend on me to keep them safe and guide them through life. Thinking about them growing up, becoming independent and leaving me behind is truly the definition of bittersweet with the bitter being enough for me to choke up just thinking about.
So I get needing purpose and feeling useful to the world. I just dont want to fill that void with litigation.

It’s one of the jobs where your skills never go completely out of style. You can just fight with your HOA until you die.
This is why Florida won’t let lawyers waive in.

attorneys are risk averse pussies who aren't good at math, but are good at boring details
it's hard to justify life at the hourly rate attorneys make
and then you die
