gang killings are performed with mostly illegal or stolen guns and target rival gangs members. most perps and victims are black or hispanic.

mass shootings are performed with legally purchased (often improperly secured) guns and target random people at locations the perp is familiar with (school, town, etc.) most perps and victims are white. many perps have mental issues

The mass shooting type you prefer to focus on is a relatively speaking a miniscule public health issue. Honestly mandatory media gag orders would probably be the best solution. People that want guns or even to just randomly harm a lot of people will find a way regardless of whatever laws we put in place. But kill off the notoriety and I think a lot of the problem goes away. I think to stay relevant we'll see more targeted assassinations.

and just spit balling here, but would punishing a mass shooter's family be 'conservative' ? it would be sort of unfair in that you're punishing innocent people but maybe it changes the deterrence profile for a shooter who is otherwise ready to murder/suicide

i don't think conservatives want increased psychiatric/mental health type checks because that feels like top down government control and who knows if they could correctly forecast it anyway
