How and why? If you do a decent job eating healthy, excercising a bit, and not wrecking your body with drugs or injuries, you should be fine until 60 or 70.
At 40ish, I feel 100% as strong, 90% as quick/athletic, and 85% energetic as I did in my 20s. The only real physical decline I've noticed is I'm sore the day after playing basketball or soccer for a couple hours, when I wouldn't have been sore in my 20s. I expect to be hiking, playing sports, pretty much whatever I want into my 50s.

My dad hurt his knees badly taking a hike that he shouldn't have taken. That was rhe beginning of the end for him. He couldn't exercise properly after that, gradually got into worse shape and died. There were other factors but that was a big turning point.
OP, aging is a choice. Do whatever you have to do to stay healthy. Focus on consistency, even if you're not doing anything intense. Also, eat clean and dump junk food.

If you consistently work out (truly, not 3x per week bullshit jogs at the gym while harassing coeds), don't eat like shit (truly, not telling yourself you eat clean while slamming cheeseburgers and porters), minimize alcohol / drug consumption, don't smoke, get adequate sleep, and are active (notice that's separate from working out--hiking, biking, swimming, sportsball), there's no reason you can't be strong, healthy, and fit in your 40s/50s/60s, and can at least manage the decline in your 70s/80s/90s to keep a good QoL. Beyond that, God's hands. But actually hitting all the conditions I raise above is rare, most people aren't disciplined enough to do it, and so they get knee pain at 47 and shrug their shoulders and say "it was out of my control!"
One thing I find fascinating is, on reddit, you have all these guys who are in their 30s and say things like "oiy, my back just aches, I'm not young like I'm used to be, age is catching up!" I assume they are all fat fuck freaks when I see comments like that because healthy fit people I know feel great with no meaningful decline in athleticism (except at the extreme margin, where almost none of us are operating anyway) in their 30s/40s.
