They crunched the numbers and were like shit we simply can't afford to pay him to not work. Also the business model of these things is to use it to pitch people on their other network slop content. Without Kimmel no one watches ABC original series. You might be saying who the hell watches ABC original programming. Well, against all odds people do. The argument that his show was losing money is overblown. The network is content to break even. But they make a ton of profit from people watching the other stuff they show on TV every day and Kimmel drives that. It's always been this way.
