"might have to stay"? north carolina is one of the best places to live in the country.

not sure how you've heard horrible things about raleigh. IMO it's one of the best metro. areas in the entire country. there's a reason it was the fastest growing city in the entire nation last year. it has the second- or third highest number of college graduates and advanced degree graduates of any metro. area in the country (trades places at the top with seattle and the SF bay area). it's a beautiful place to live - four seasons but none of them too extreme. lots of space, and you can buy a home with a nice yard for dirt cheap. the entire metro. is built in a forest. when you're driving around, it's tough to tell that 1.7 million people live there. also, it's two hours to gorgeous beaches. two hours to the mountains. outside of the metro., it's sparsely populated so you can easily be out in nature and more or less to yourself.

the metro. area itself is outstanding. it has a strong farm-to-table movement in its cuisine and is a wonderful foodie city. every ethnic cuisine is well represented - you won't find a huge NUMBER for each cuisine, but each is represented very well. basically, take the top few places of each genre you'd find in SF, for example, and transplant them in raleigh, and that's basically what you have. it's tough to find shitty food in the area.

because the population is educated, you have access to great culture and activities. the carolina performing arts lineup of performing artists rivals any collection of artists you'd find in places like SF. nightlife is a bit weak, but chapel hill has a pretty good scene. i like the music scene a lot in the area - a pimento cheese sandwich while listening to bluegrass/folk on a friday evening is tough to beat.

the people in raleigh are generally cool to be around. they are either educated southerners or northern transplants who wanted to chill out a bit. it makes for a great community vibe. i like it more than charlotte - charlotte is what you'd expect to find if you gave bankers the opportunity to build a city from scratch - it's very sterile and stepford, with a lot of vanilla shit like pro sports teams and NASCAR. but it has no "soul" to it. still, i'd consider living there too because the dollar goes so far - you can have a $250k house on a lake and an acre of land but still only a 20-min commute into downtown.

listen, i've been to what many people consider the "promised land." i work biglaw in the SF Bay Area. i live in a place that many people consider the epitome of a diverse city with tons of shit to do and beautiful nature all around. but i would take a 50% salary cut and my left nut just to get back to the triangle. (raleigh/durham/chapel hill).

EDIT: pls DESCRIBE what you'll be working in the area. if you take either raleigh or charlotte, i'd gladly take the other one.

i'll be working in corp finance in the nc region.

basically i had just heard raleigh was a suburban hellhole. i've never actually been though. i will definitely consider it a bit more after reading your post though. thanks

also, if you love the area so much why not move? are there no jobs in your field in the area?

definitely not ARE country red necks in the rural areas. i've lived in SC, GA, FL, and NC among other places, and NC rural places are distinctly different. even the rural areas are well maintained and generally appear "well off" compared to their farther south brethren.

i'm also of a mixed heritage, and i could go as deep into the rural areas as you can possibly go in NC, and not once did i ever get a strange or peculiar glance from the locals. i'd make an exception for fayetteville, nc, which is an absolute shithole, but otherwise north carolinians are kickin' it pretty well. maybe it's because the UNC school system has been strong since like forever.

in my experience red areas of california (like the central valley) are more podunk. but like a poster above mentions, this is an aspect of "rural," not "rural south"

fair. i guess winters bother me more than summers. still, if you look at the temp. splits for raleigh, you get 30/50 for january and 70/90 for july. the intense heat/humidity period only lasts from mid-june to about now, though. compared to where i grew up (florida), that's easy.

Durham to Raleigh commute isn't terrible since most of the traffic is going the other direction (Raleigh to RTP).

Raleigh is trying to be little Atlanta with 3-4 "downtowns". Someday it will probably work, but it hasn't yet.

There are parts of Durham that are livable, but not many. Just live where the Dookies live.

if you live in Durham, you'll want to live anywhere west and southwest of Duke University (toward Chapel Hill), or right at the university in apartments around erwin road or near 9th street. anywhere east of that is a "war zone" (gentrifying rapidly, but still a bit suspect to call home). downtown has changed massively since i first saw it in 2005. it was a rundown hellhole back then, and now it's cleaned up and filling up with shops, restaurants, etc. if i wanted to run a small business, i would try to secure a long-term retail space there while rent is still low and watch the business pour in as the area continues to develop.

i did the durham-raleigh commute for a short period and never encountered anything other than freeway speeds going into raleigh in the morning and back to durham in the evening (because it's against the RTP traffic - for some reason all the engineers live down in Cary). i could make it from durham to downtown raleigh in 30-35 min.

Your parameters leave out a bunch of great neighborhoods (Trinity Park, Watts-Hillandale, Old North Durham, Duke Park, etc.) on the near northside. The dangerous areas are really east of Roxboro/Mangum and south of Interstate 85, and even some of those (Cleveland Holloway) are starting to gentrify.

If I was looking for a nice apartment/condo type deal I'd want to be in one of the old tobacco warehouses, West Village or American Tobacco.

If I was looking for more of a small house, I dig what's going on in the Old North Durham area because it's convenient to all the new, interesting stuff going on in the Central Park area. Trinity Park is always pretty credited too because of its easy access to 9th Street and Brightleaf

charlotte is one of the most boring cities of its size in the country. its like any generic city with 500k people

raleigh meanwhile is somewhat interesting for its size. diverse regional economy and interest of state gov't and city feels more naturally grown. also benefits from being in one of the biggest university hubs in the country and near all the good things about college towns

because the triangle area has three "foci" (chapel hill, durham, raleigh) that have been around forever, you get more distinct styles than just massive suburbia. sure, if you grew up somewhere like the northeast, the endless strip malls will surprise you. but commute times in the triangle area aren't that bad (one of the 10 easiest commutes of a major metro. area as recently rated by Forbes or some shit). compares favorably to atlanta or even charlotte.

Pretty credited.

North Raleigh, Durham south of I-40, and big swaths of Chapel Hill do have a never-ending-suburban feel to them. And there are some areas inside the beltline in Raleigh that have that old-suburban feel to them.

All the new suburban towns surrounding Raleigh are tract home shit. But there are some great, urban neighborhoods inside the beltline.

share a couple examples? someone mentioned a gig to me in the triangle, and i just sorta blew off the whole idea. but this thread has me intrigued, and i'd like to investigate. i've lived in nyc for many years, just so you know where i'm coming from.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for. Much of Raleigh's nightlife is in Glenwood South and they've got a decent number of relatively new condo/apartment mid-rises in that area. I really like Five Points and if I was moving to Raleigh would probably try to buy in one of the neighborhoods that make that up.

The rule of thumb in the triangle is that people coming from bigger/northeastern cities like NYC tend to be more attracted to Durham, while the people coming from smaller/midwestern and/or suburban cities tend to be more attracted to Raleigh, fwiw.

Definitely. There are some good bars and restaurants in that area. That building backs up to Fayetteville Street, which until recently was a pedestrian mall. Once they did a big streetscape project and reopened it to traffic that area started to really come alive again.

For me it would depend where the job was. If work was in downtown Raleigh I'd definitely be inside the beltline, probably in Glenwood South, the Warehouse District, Five Points or maybe University Park

If the job was in RTP or farther west, I'd be in downtown Durham because I prefer it to Raleigh
