Mysterious Double Pulses from Distant Stars
A curious astronomical puzzle has emerged from the work of Richard Stanton, a former NASA/JPL scientist who has been conducting independent optical SETI research. Using a custom-built photometer capable of capturing light changes at 100-microsecond intervals, Stanton detected unusual double pulses of light from two different stars: HD89389 and 51 Pegasi. What makes these observations particularly intriguing is their identical pattern—two flashes separated by exactly 4.4 seconds—and the fact that they don’t match any known phenomena like aircraft, satellites, or atmospheric disturbances.
Solar System Mystery or Something More?
Rather than originating from the distant stars themselves, analysis suggests these signals likely come from within our own solar system. Stanton proposes several explanations, including edge diffraction from an unknown object or possibly an “opaque ring” orbiting somewhere nearby. The pulses actually increased starlight by 25% rather than dimming it, creating an even more perplexing scenario for astronomers to unravel.
Whatever is modulating the star, whether it’s aliens or not aliens, it seems to be coming from possibly the solar system.

While extraterrestrial technology remains on the list of possibilities, the study sensibly emphasizes natural explanations. The real scientific value here lies in the methodical documentation of an unexplained phenomenon. For this discovery to gain credibility, other researchers will need to replicate these observations using different equipment—transforming what could be an instrumental quirk into potentially the first glimpses of something genuinely new in our cosmic neighborhood.
