I watched Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) after it was recommended as a paired film with The Lives of Others (2006) by a poster here: https://www.xoxohth.com/thread.php?thread_id=5756467&mc=12&forum_id=2#49147802

I liked The Lives of Others much more than I liked Good Bye, Lenin!, because the former dealt with the subtle interior changes a man undergoes in his life over time, and the big price to pay - with no societal recognition - for doing the right thing. The Lives of Others had much better beats than a similar film, The Conversation (1974), which also dealt with the topic of spying, but did not convey the price to pay for doing the right thing.

Good Bye, Lenin!, on the other hand, is a cultural film - basically the surface differences between East versus West Berlin (clothes, music, food manufacturers, etc.), and how rapidly East Berlin adopted the culture of West Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The plot itself was pretty flimsy, and I didn't care very much for the actors (vs. the main actor in The Lives of Others was incredible). The cultural "fish out of water" stuff was done better with Look Who's Back? (2015). There were a couple of emotional beats that hit, though, in Good Bye, Lenin - basically where the daughter realizes the father did not abandon the family, and may still love them.

Overall I would give it a 5/10 or so - it was a bit interesting seeing how rapidly East Berlin changed in its culture and how, but it didn't have the depth of character development or wrestling with deeper spritiual/metaphysical issues that I care about.

I agree with this. Lives Of Others is a legit great film that has something to say about the grim totalitarian surveillance state. (Small overlooked scene where the frightened female neighbor is told that if she opens her mouth her daughter will be expelled from medical school and end her life working in a factory instead). Goodbye Lenin does none of that, it is a cute cultural comedy with overtones of “ostalgie” (nostalgia for the supposed good old days of East Germany). It’s cute but that’s it.

interestingly the writer/director of Lives Of Others von Donnersmark has never managed to make a great follow up movie (The Tourist was lol, Never Look Away was ok), I think he had one important story to tell and that’s it he’s done - but his one story was incredibly good

I remember Depp's comic timing in The Tourist was distractingly awful - like he went flat and sad when he should have done the opposite, constantly. This alone almost ruined the film. His comic timing in the Pirates movies was good, though

Someone said I should watch this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiane_F._(film)

have seen it, have an original copy of the book (from my German speaking father’s collection), yes you should watch it, it’s not a great movie technically but it has a lot of substance about a (supposedly mostly) true story

The Tourist is an incredible Radiohead song, however. And it is way actually written in Germany. Thom Yorke said he wrote it while walking around near his hotel while on tour. It's about a dog that barked at him lol.
