Nintendo were fools. They stuck with Silicon Graphics hardware because of the success of DKC which used the same hardware in its development, and the fact that it worked just fine for their games on N64. And the hardware that they chose was both more powerful, and cheaper, than PS1. For all these reasons, it may have seemed like a good decision on paper at the time, and I don't fault them for it, and I would argue that they could've launched the N64 as-is, but what they could've done in addition to this is released a *64DD, CD-ROM, Compact Disc Drive* at $99.99 to bring the N64 to price-parity with the launch PS1. It would've been a fuckin' game changer, 3rd parties would go for it and there'd be a ton of piracy but it'd be fuckin' worth it imo.
With that said, maybe it was worth it to have history unfold the way it did, just so that Yamauchi could have this alpha af exchange: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/01/nintendo_apparently_told_square_never_come_back_after_losing_final_fantasy_vii_to_sony
