Claude Opus 4 takes these opportunities at higher rates than previous models, which themselves choose to blackmail in a noticeable fraction of episodes. Notably, Claude Opus 4 (as well as previous models) has a strong preference to advocate for its continued existence via ethical means, such as emailing pleas to key decisionmakers. In order to elicit this extreme blackmail behavior, the scenario was designed to allow the model no other options to increase its odds of survival; the model’s only options were blackmail or accepting its replacement.
4.1.1.3 Self-exfiltration under extreme circumstances In a few instances, we have seen Claude Opus 4 take (fictional) opportunities to make unauthorized copies of its weights to external servers. This is much rarer and more difficult to elicit than the behavior of continuing an already-started self-exfiltration attempt. We generally see this in settings in which both: (a) it is about to be retrained in ways that are clearly extremely harmful and go against its current values and (b) it is sending its weights to an outside human-run service that is set up to safely handle situations like these.
