To the extent Trump's latest mood swing (with no indication of material support for Ukraine) is relevant at all, it's based on the fact that he has access to very good intelligence about the state of the Russian summer offensive and war effort in general. He seems to have been given a very pro-Ukraine report on the state of the fighting. |

1. Russian soldiers aren't motivated to begin with (most just wanted the money) and are being asked to give their lives to take destroyed Ukrainian villages no one ever heard of.
2. The drone age has given a greater advantage to the defending side than ever before in history. Previously, the attacker could count on unmotivated defending soldiers panicking and running, but the drone operators doing the actual killing are sitting nice and safe miles behind the front lines. When they see a Russian attack, they see juicy targets for what is like a video game to them.
3. Drones are cheap, and Ukraine has ramped up its production of it to a level that Europe alone can finance a very effective defense. With Russia itself kicking in several billion Euros a year from its frozen funds- that's unprecedented in warfare to have one side's funds being used to finance the opposing side.
Add these together, and it's not surprising that Russia is making such slow progress. |
