what if they're severely depressed for decades and then eventually find things that give them joy and purpose?

Obviously exercise is a positive and wards against depression etc and the greater prevalence certainly has something to do with our disconnect from what we were evolutionarily designed to do and how we live...but clearly there is also some aspect of the human condition that has benefited from the capacity to be miserable.

depression is genetic

it used to be called a "melancholy personality" before everything got pathologized in gaymerica

there's no medication that you can take that will do anything positive other than stimulants

what's happening in your body is that you have a lower baseline dopamine level (genetic) because you burn through dopamine faster than you can normally take it in (genetic)

when you take stims, you're artificially boosting your dopamine levels, so you feel better. but if you make a habit of it, your body will adjust and burn dopamine even faster, so you'll lose the boost

best things you can do are boosting dopamine in non-pharmaceutical ways (exercise, sex, other satisfying activities that cause your body to reward itself with dopamine). and you gotta make a habit of them and you gotta put yourself in situations where you're "forced" to do them because you don't have an inherent unconscious drive to do them

i'm not saying this is easy, it's definitely not. i'm the same way as you and it's hard for me too. it's something you struggle with your whole life. it could be worse, you could be short, ugly, brown, etc. focus on the positive gifts you got and most importantly NEVER EVER EVER FEEL SORRY FOR YOURSELF EVER NO MATTER WHAT

Effectively no one is depressed who does the following consistently and regularly:

(1) Excercises;

(2) Sleeps a full night's sleep every night on a very consistent schedule and during proper sleeping hours;

(3) Eats healthy,

(4) Avoids GC poisons,

(5) limits alcohol and drugs (including fraud kike prescription drugs),

(6) spends time and in the sun outside everyday,

(7) avoid doom scrolling and similar phone/computer activities;

(8) has meaningful personal relationships.

I've been depressed since I was 12, at the moment I am old and getting fatter, but for a solid 20+ of those years I was very physically active and in damn near perfect shape, being sedentary makes it worse but gymos get the causation backwards on working out in that if you have the energy to specifically go work out then you are, by definition, not really depressed

cr. I'm guilty of something similar w/r/t hobbies, I'm always telling depressed people to get hobbies as if it's trivial to get motivated to go out and do stuff if you can't even remember the last time you experienced joy
