Is it Drunkard thats the bort audiophile? I’m planning a hifi analog system - turntable, phono amp, preamp, DAC, power amp, passive speakers. Need advice on speakers for a kinda small open concept den area about 26 x 18. Looking at the Wharfedale EVO 4.3 floorstanders atm. Cr?

If you are looking at Wharfedale, you’d do better with Klipsch Heritage collection speakers.

Use this as a starting point. Not that the measurements are everything but many speakers have glaring flaws or are just a bad deal. Lots of other useful info too like if a certain speaker needs to be driven hard to sound it’s best which may or may not be ideal for your space/requirements

Speakers are tricky. A lot of it comes down to budget and aesthetics. I've generally been fond of outfits that sell direct to consumer, just because it seems like there's more value when there's no middlemen or salesmen to pay. I'm currently desiring Philharmonic BMRs. Not sure whether I want the bookshelf or tower version. I don't really have the space for towers at the moment.

Electronics are interesting. There's a been a fair amount of innovation in recent years with Class D amps. You get big, clean power at prices much more reasonable than traditional Class AB stuff.

https://www.buckeyeamp.com/shop

I'm also intrigued by digital room correction. I've played with it a little bit. I don't have Dirac but a lot of people swear by it. If I did get a Dirac unit I'd get something from MiniDSP or NAD

I need aesthetic speakers with walnut casings. I know bookshelf speakers are en vogue right now but I kinda prefer the look of floorstanders for a living room/den, I would def be getting a sub too. This would be a simple 2-channel + sub stereo rig, the home theater is upstairs in another room.

For a sub I'd recommend SVS. You may want to get two subs, that's a large space you have

IDK your budget but other floorstanders that are available in walnut & seem interesting to me are Revel F206 and Ascend Acoustics Sierra Towers

Revel stuff you might be able to find a deal on, they are close to revamping their lineup & discontinuing the current models. They had a pretty good sale going not too long ago.

I have a full set of the Sierra 2 bookshelves with the RAAL (5x including one flipped on its side as a center channel).

I like them a lot and they were a noticeable improvement over a set of good (recommended on audiophile forums) entry level speakers with one caveat: they are not that great at medium and low volumes. Music sounds almost muffled. As you push them above medium towards reference volume, they really wake up and start to sound phenomenal. Really happy with how they sound with action movies and video games played loud.

Interesting, ty. That sounds like a really sick setup.

Personally I listen at low levels a lot. One reason I'm really interested in the Philharmonic BMRs is that they have really wide dispersion. I've heard some people say they sound good at low volumes, almost like loudness compensation was turned on

DACs aren’t solved. There are huge subjective design decisions in each.

High end DACs, like Chord or Ayre or Meridian, sound better.

Differences in DACs might exist but those differences are so *incredibly* small that it's not worth screwing around with until you've got every single other piece squared away. Speakers, room treatment & room EQ offer far more bang for the buck than DAC "upgrades"

In my experience it is that better DACs make a wider variety of material sound good than cheaper off the shelf Sabre DACs.

DACs are not dumb and deterministic. They can take in data and treat different patterns in data differently.

Two goods tests are a single human voice speaking and a single cymbal shimmer. Both are hard to render accurately.

Audio is really subjective, and how it sounds is highly dependent upon the room environment. I have Klipsch Heresy IV speakers and an SVS sub woofer. The Audio Science reference in this thread guy hates Klipsch, but I like them. I have a Thorens TD1500 turntable with a couple of different cartridges and an Audio Technica for digitizing old 78s. One suggestion I have is to get a streamer. Changing records and CDs gets old and streaming is much cheaper than building a huge collection. While I enjoy physical media most of what I listen to is streamed over Amazon music via a Denon streamer. I just tell Alexa to play something and it happens, or I can use the phone app. I also have things stashed on my phone and computer, but streaming is the lazy man's way of listening and the quality is fine for my old ears. Some of this audiophile hair splitting gets crazy and there are some severely autistic dudes getting persnickety about tiny issues.

One tip I have is that if you want to order something that is expensive, especially a German or other European brand, check out Thomannmusic.com in Germany. My turntable was $3K in the US, discounted some places to $2500, but only $1600 from Thomann. Took about a week to get it. All the customs stuff gets handled (no duty on manual turntables) on autopilot. As easy as Amazon. They do returns, but it's more of a hassle, so I only did for the huge price difference in that particular turntable that I wanted.

Crutchfield is really nice to do business with. Easy returns/swaps. That's where I bought my speakers. Got a huge deal because of nearly unnoticeable blems in the grills.

You familiar with EPI at all? They were huge back in the 70s

I'm currently doing a complete rebuild on a pair of M100s. There's an outfit that sells brand new drivers for them. 8" woofer, aluminum dome tweeter, the "crossover" is just a cap on the tweeter

It's kinda silly because I'm putting more money into them than they are worth but there's a huge nostalgia factor in them for me. They were the speakers in my parent's basement when I was a kid.

I had a pair of EPI100s and really loved them. One of my sons has them at his house, and I have been tempted to repo them. One of them (at least) needs rebuilding. The kids played electric guitar through them and blew something, plus they are old. I think I bought them around 1980. I always thought they were at least as good as AR.

Well if you do repo them, I suggest hitting up humanspeakers.com if you want to hang on to them.

The ones I have are older than yours. Early 70's, wood finish, not vinyl. When I first started thinking of fixing them, I was just going to replace the crossover. The speakers originally came with a dial for an adjustment to the tweeter level. Those dials are super prone to failure, and mine were very afflicted. They sounded like shit when you turned the dial, very scratchy

Unfortunately I was drunk when I took the speakers apart and I ended up damaging the woofer cone, so that was the impetus toward doing a full rebuild instead of something simpler.

I'm already $400 into the parts for the rebuild and I still have some tools and grille cloth to buy, ljl. If I flipped them I wouldn't even get half that.

Old, how do you like the Heresies? How do they sound on acoustic music?

I was looking at those for the vacation house.

In my main house I run Meridian DSP8000.

They sound really good to me. Their low bass is not extremely strong and I do use a subwoofer, but mainly because I had one already. I don't like boomy bass, so when I switch the sub in and out the difference is pretty subtle. I could probably live without it.

I find them excellent on vocals, acoustic, and classical. I listen to a lot of jazz and classical, plus vintage rock. It's hard to know how they compare without doing A/B, but I really like them. They are good enough that I can really tell a difference in quality of various recordings and sources when I play them.

They are not so big that the visually overwhelm a room, which pleases my wife.

I have been completely free of the "trade up" syndrome since I got them. I also have some Klipsch RP-600M bookcase speakers that I had before the Heresies, and they sound really good, too. They are what sold me on Klipsch. Both the Heresies and RP600s are very efficient so it doesn't take much power to drive them. I like running an amp so it has a lot of headroom. If you like tubes they would probably pair well with one of the affordable but kind of low power tube amps.

Believe it or not but there are speakers that sound far better than Sonos Fives

Also Sonos is kinda shady. You can't use their original gear in conjunction with their new stuff. There's no technical reason behind it. It's just pure, planned, forced obsolescence.

I realize that there are speakers that sound a lot better than Sonos Fives. I've heard them, I've heard a $10k+ speaker system, I've heard $7k studio monitors, and yeah there is a difference. I guess I just don't get the expense and trouble to do all of this stuff, and I am a very audio-oriented dude. Sonos just works great IMO.

A lot of is just different strokes for different folks. There's a thread on Audio Science Review where a guy had a set of top of the line Genelec monitors ($10k/pair) and he wasn't hearing much of a difference between those and Sonos 5s

https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/sonos-play-5-vs-genelec-8361a.36736/

I don't play but I do like shoegaze. I don't get the difference between cheap guitars and expensive ones. I don't get the difference between dudes that have 6 pedals and those that have two dozen.

PRIMER:

- cheap guitars can sound very similar to expensive guitars, especially in a live setting and with lots of effects. The nicer guitars play better (aka they feel better) and when you play it by itself you can tell the sonic difference that the wood and pickups provide. Although I am a true believer that pickups make up 80-90% of the sound, you can slap nice pickups on a piece of shit guitar and it still sounds pretty good - I did this.

- 6 pedals and two dozen - honestly you can do a LOT with 6 pedals, and most people probably wouldn't be able to tell. the 24 pedal dorks are doing shit like the same effect layered on itself multiple times (like 3-5 reverbs, etc) and EQs that the average listener probably wouldn't notice either.

Both of them take a true "ear" and a lot of experience to tell much of the difference and frankly its probably not possible to listen to a guitar tone and tell you exactly how many pedals are involved (other than to just identify distinct effects in the tone). I'm assuming this is similar to Sonos 5 vs some really nice bookshelf speakers

I have Sonos for my AVR setup - Arc, Sub and two Ones as rears. It’s nice but when using a turntable it just makes more sense to use analog equipment, plus there is a sacrifice in sound quality for convenience with Sonos.

ASR is generally very good, but a lot of times they'll go too far. They'll shit on gear that doesn't measure perfectly even if those differences are mostly inaudible. Seems like half the people there are advocates of having studio monitors in a living room

your speakers are coupled to your room, they interact as a whole. so make sure to properly treat your room. if you're plopping 20+ grand on a playback system, you should hire an acoustician first.

That amp is a solid choice. Personally though at that price point, I'd consider going with separate preamp & amp. For example, the Schiit Freya S preamp is $599 and the Buckeye Hypex NC252MP is $575

Turntables aren't really my thing so I can't comment too much on them. I will say though that I don't really like the Bluetooth connectivity of the Alva TT. Even if it's a feature you're not going to use, it's still something that cost extra to engineer

The expense of vinyl is something that has kept me away from it

One of my all-time favorite albums is the Lost in Translation soundtrack. A couple years ago it got a Record Store Day release on violet vinyl. It's not even all that rare of a release, there were like 8000 copies pressed. But used examples go for like $100 and new ones are about $200. Just for one fucking album.

Having a fairly modest vinyl collection quickly starts to cost thousands. That's money that I'd rather throw into playback gear

Digital is technically superior even at just CD resolution

It's often said that vinyl releases sometimes have mastering with more dynamic range than the digital release. I haven't seen a ton of evidence for this. Furthermore, even if a vinyl release had more dynamic range, that is something that can be captured by ripping the vinyl to digital

i sold high end audio for years out of high school. i had a SICK pair of martin logans. sold everything when i went to lolschool.

i'm starting to get back into it. just got a pro-ject carbon evo turntable. don't even have speakers or an amp yet, just have it connected to a shitty soundbar. plan on getting some high end components piecemeal over time.

i've been out of the game for like 15 years now so i don't have any advice on modern equipment. but i will say -- go to your local a/v shop and talk to a salesman. high end audio shit is ridiculously reliable. a good set of speakers and components can last a lifetime. i would never buy anything new. no matter what your budget is, you could do way better buying some used stuff. these small audio shops are hungry and the mark up on audio gear is ridiculous. go in, talk to a salesman, and tell them you're looking for whatever and to give you a call when there's a deal on something. i sold shit 70%+ off to people because we just wanted to get rid of it. since it's such a niche hobby there are few people around to sell stuff to.

MQA is a checksum technology meant to facilitate bandwidth polite lossless streaming.

However, you should instead just buy and stream uncompressed music.

People who say MQA is bad are dumb. It’s like saying a triangle doesn’t taste good.

MQA isn’t bad. But it is mostly irrelevant. It does make a ton of sense if you are using Tidal over LTE for example though.

I think you don’t have the fine hearing to hear the subtle differences between compression and unfolding algorithms.

There is nothing MQA is better at than an equivalent non-patent encumbered hi-res format. This is a fact borne out by measurements.

That is correct. My post above was a troll. You don't do MQA for sound quality. You do MQA for verification that the file is unedited and for a very slight file size advantage vs. FLAC at equivalent bitrates, sample rates and bit depths.

That's why I called it a checksum tool, but the bald failing liberal arts lawyers on this blog don't have enough brainpower to understanding anything.

Getting good bass reproduction doesn't come cheap. You can get pretty close with bookshelves and one sub (that's what I have rn), but it's far better to have two towers and two subs

Electronics make a difference too. Dirac is 180 but it's not cheap

Cables are flame

Dirac is a proprietary form of digital room correction.

You get a calibrated measurement microphone and play back frequency sweeps in various parts of your room. It then generates filters that even out the frequency response in your room. It's not flame at all. It's most effective at bass frequencies because you can precisely kill room modes.

You can get results very close to Dirac with a measurement mic, the (free) Room EQ Wizard software, and a playback stack capable of implementing parametric EQ filters. Dirac is apparently superior to that approach because they do some sort of time alignment in addition to parametric EQ

Treating the room is absolutely an ideal that an audiophile should strive toward before resorting to digital room correction.

The issue is that room treatments are ugly and expensive. Good luck getting a wife to sign off on to making your living room look like a recording studio.

Room correction definitely makes a difference. I switched between two receivers from the same manufacturer, one with with the older version of Audyssey and another with Audyssey XT 32. The newer software did make a tangible difference. With the older one, there was *some* difference pre and post correction, but it was a lot more noticeable with the newer one.

Correct. My $120k Meridian DSP8000s reproduce true to life bass. I look down on those who have less.

Was listening to some Atmos tracks and it is pretty dope ngl. I wonder if stereo is on the way to obsolescence now.

Have you turned on Headphone Accommodations, then tap Custom Audio Setup? Do that with AirPods Max; you probably won't care about expensive speakers anymore.

I don’t think Technics was intended for DJs at first, they just preferred it for the direct drive tech and it became the standard. You can still get a Japan-built one for about $1800

I was debating between that and Orbit Theory and just went with the latter because it's made in USA. I have the vertical Pro-Ject connected to a Sonos amp in my dining room and it's 180.

I mentioned upthread that I'm not much of a turntablemo, but I've always thought that if I did get a TT, it would be a Pro-Ject. They get good reviews and I like the aesthetics

Ordered these through a local supplier, made in Canada.

Decided against the wharfedales, i thought they were made in Britain but they're actually Chinese trash.

Today I ordered a used RME ADI-2 DAC FS and new KEF LS50s.

I wasn't planning on pulling the trigger on anything, I just happened across some good deals. The LS50s are on clearance for $715 at Best Buy right now. They were $1500 when they first came out a decade ago
