where would you want to live out of those neighborhoods?

edit:

village = west village/greenwich village

soho = including nolita

UWS = 60-90th street, between broadway and CPW

It's the best neighborhood. Soho has too many tourists and the UWS consists of families & old, single Jewish women trying to make it in the arts.

i dunno dude

don't you see the appeal of living in the high 50's?

on the east side you got the best views in the city, especially by sutton place next to the bridge and some semblance of nightlife. good restaurants too and close enough to UES, e.g. you can hop in a cab and be at a restauranton upper madison in less than 5 minutes.

even on the west side, some of the nicest buildings in the city are there. central park south, 50's and 8th ave. has some of the greatest high-rises in the world. 50's and 7th ave. has some of the classiest pre-war, albeit that's not really 20something territory.

residential living aside, the plaza district undoubtedly has the best offices in the whole city. most prestigious place to have an office. 9 west 57th, 767 5th, etc.,

i guess im not cool or hipster enough to have developed an aversion to all things corporate. i like the corporate look of manhattan, its sleek and clean and holy fuck lets not forget that we are talking about nyc here. beyond the aesthetic appeal, midtown can be decently residential and i actually like how "deserted" it gets after-hours (bluesmoke's comment above)

Village/SoHo is a toss up based more on personal preference, both are clearly >>>>>>>> UWS. For young people, I would rule out anything above 14th street

have been looking at some gramercy listings, but it doesn't look like a well defined neighborhood, but rather a small cluster of good buildings surrounded by murray hill/kips bay

if anything, kips bay is more arbitrarily defined than gramercy. don't even get me started about "rose hill." no clue how i lived here all my life and haven't heard that name until i went apartment hunting in that area

West Village

You have a ton of amazing restaurants in your neighborhood, you have all the subway lines at your disposal (N,Q,R, A,C,E, B,D,F,M, 1,2,3) although I know ballers like RSF don't take the subway, you're near other cool neighborhoods (Soho, East Village, Chelsea) and there's a lot of good nightlife. Also, beautiful architecture right around the park.

i go out in soho at least as much as west village, probably a lot more. the shopping thing is pretty annoying though, broadway between spring and houston especially is overflowing with asians/euros shopping at bloomingdales, uniqlo, banana republic. pretty gross. i don't mind the smaller shops on greene/wooster/etc however

what are good places to go out in soho?

some of my favorite bars in the city - such as the dove - are in the village. there's a good mix too, of divey bars, college bars and more quiet, romantic bars that are good for dates. all in all an A+ area.

i say UWS or soho only because you can get a decent clean apartment for a reasonable price. in the cool parts of the village (like grove, bedford, perry), all the apartments are either pre-war walk-up roach motel type places or they're absurdly expensive. it's supply and demand; most of the properties in those neighborhoods are condos/co-ops or brownstones. incidentally, this is the same situation as tribeca.

you can get a nicer apartment closer to nyu, like off 5th/university between 8th st and union square, but then you're in nowhere near as cool of a neighborhood as soho or as nice a neighborhood as the UWS.

the restaurant thing is pretty subjective. both neighborhoods have similarly regarded food scenes, and both are close to east village. i guess chinatown/LES are more accessible from soho and chelsea is more accessible from WV.

i think the tourist thing is only a big deal if you live close to broadway. if you go east into nolita or west toward west broadway its more chill. just like in west village, it sucks to be right off 6th ave and gets better toward 7th ave and more west.
