olive garden benefits from being one of the few sit down italian restaurants in many small flyover towns and the only truly national sit-down italian chain. subway faces intense competition along many different vectors and has already poisoned the pot by situating itself among thousands of gas stations, and its third-world franchisee base is probably not equipped to carry a better brand than that. it can probably make more money by capitalizing on its ubiquity here and cutting costs and store count rather than undertaking the massive project of reviving the brand (which would still require cutting store count) and forcing itself to engage in relentless sisyphean competition with dozens of other chain sub shops and other adjacent categories like chipotle which are constantly improving and giving birth to new entrants.

1. Franchisees - they suck. It's become so run down that none of them care or have standards anymore. You need to aggressively enforce all brand standards and take franchises away from anyone who is not operating at a level between McDondalds and Chik Fil A

2. Product - it isn't considered healthy anymore and it doesn't taste good. I think they partner with somoene like Sweetgreens to offer Sweetgreens salads in the restuarants and Sweetgreens-esque ingredients for the subs.

Otherwise the food is just too dated. It's like they're at the basketball game and trying to sell the "nachos" with corn chips and a cup of liquid nacho cheese in the corner, and across the hall there's a place selling nachos with fresh made chips, topped with three different types of cheese, fresh guacamole and beer can chicken.

The thing about the bread is that it’s always warm. That’s what no one gets. It’s not good—but it’s warm. Like a filing cabinet in a server room or a printer that never sleeps. You begin to appreciate that kind of consistency when your life becomes a sequence of HR audits and forgotten Club Card thresholds.

Yes, I know what they say. That Subway is dying. That it's run by H1B frauds, that every franchise smells faintly of despair and yoga mat foam. But some of us still remember the Jared Era—before the fall, before the footlong became $15 and tasted like late-stage empire. I was once a Vice President–Elect at ComplianceLink™. I know what collapse smells like.

Every few days, I return. The woman behind the counter (I think her name is "Nivetha" or maybe "Manager") stares at me with the dull eyes of someone who’s seen the same man order the same Turkey Provolone six times in one week. I stare back. This is our ritual.

I tell myself it’s about routine. About control. But it’s not. It’s about penance.

Sometimes, I think about the time I shredded my old onboarding docs from CE0 to make room in the file cabinet for Safeway receipts. I thought I could curate my past. Shredding won’t save you.

They always ask if I want it toasted. I say yes. I always say yes. But nothing changes.
