Date: March 7th, 2010 9:28 AM Author: Lilac Space Depends on the school, of course, but I'm guessing you're somewhere in 15-20. Your school should be able to give you stats on this. In general, though, these cutoffs are not right. Probably more like top 15% for a shot at dist, top 4-5% for a shot at COA, top 1% for a shot at certain prestigious COAs, and no shot at some COAs where the judge just won't hire anyone from your school ever.
Your best shot is a judge near the school or a judge who went to the school; even better if you went to the same undergrad as the judge. Don't waste the stamp on feeders & judges who care about grades (assuming these ranges describe you). You're an easy cut for them.
Work hard to get your grades up & apply after working a year--some/many judges are moving to preferring work experience, you have the benefit of applying much earlier, and you have the ability to stack another year of good grades. No harm in applying now--EXCEPT that you should be careful about the reccommenders, in that they will likely not go to bat for you over a materially higher-ranked student when it comes down to a judge to whom you both applied. Unless they really like you...you be the judge of that.

This doesn't mean everyone in the top 33% or 15% or 10% applied for clerkships, of course. Nevertheless, the odds are still pretty long. |

top 33 percent for d ct - maybe, depending on where you go to school. your best shot is at your local district court: SDNY judges aren't scrambling to hire top 1/3 from Vandy or BU. if you go to a "T20" that is located in a competitive district, like USC, you'll probably have a tougher time, because those judges are flooded with applicants from the top schools.
also don't rule out magistrates. i know that people on this board look down on those clerkships, but you'll learn a lot, and it beats unemployment. some magistrates are also very well-connected in the local legal community, and that can help you land a job. |
