The Warden was falsely pretending to be righteous and in the end he got got.
The point of the story is that "salvation lies within." It's not within the Bible though, it's within the characters themselves.
The story is very Christian. Andy is wicked and does a wicked deed, but through his experience, he comes to help others in need and take down the wicked Warden, and through all of that he is purified and comes out clean on the other side with a second chance.
The story is shares many elements with The Count of Monte Cristo, which is given a wink in the film, when the gang is in the prison library.
