My firm has been working with LW on a recent case. When I spoke to him last month, the Latham partner I'm working with was praising the firm's management committee, saying the firm was now in a much better position than many of its competitors (he mentioned Clifford Chance as a firm with big problems), and talked about how the firm was minimizing its "leverage". I asked if "leverage" meant "hard working associates", and he said yes.
I don't quite get this. Aren't associates who bill even a modest number of hours annually profitable for the firm?

That's what I mean. Not to sound populist but the current downturn has led to a lot of irrational thinking. Suddenly the associates that made partners rich are the problem.
Another partner I met blamed law firm woes on escalating associate salaries. Haven't PPP risen at an equal or higher rate over the same period?
Both of these guys were very senior, so it's reasonable to presume their thinking is common among the management teams at firms.

they'll manage it better than latham. this happened in part because latham expanded recklessly without having built up broad practices. case in point, bankruptcy and lit at latham ny are small, weak practice groups with TTT partners. unlike at the bigboys, latham just does not get enough work in these groups to carry the firm.
also, latham's corp group is second and third choice for a lot of ny clients. firms hire dpw, skadden, debevoise, over latham. when there isn't enough work, latham gets completely pwned. that's why good firms seriously pwned latham in this recession.

We didn't spend too much time on the subject (this was just over a lunch break). I'm not going to get into too many details about the guy's background for fear of outing myself.
He talked a lot about how the mgmt committee is composed of partners who ara also working with clients and doing everyday stuff so they stay attuned to what's going on.
I think a lot of you law students overestimate this "reputational hit". I don't think many firms ITE are concerned with what law students think, there are plenty more where the current crop came from. However, if highly productive partners threaten to bolt, that's much more serious. BigLaw Partner DukeSucks explained this subject fairly well elsewhere.
In any event, even if this partner had doubts about Latham's direction, it isn't like he was going to criticize mgmt in front of me. What would that do for him?

partners are already bolting.
he's being very shortsighted, unless you want to make an argument for how Shearman wasn't damaged.
if this is wrong then why aren't the rest of the v20 firms following latham?
