its more of a resurregence. even classics have dumb slapstick. quixote is full of it. 90s was more of an indulgent return to form and admitting "yeah dumb slapstick is entertaining"

i think because it became "hack" aka overdone, obvious, and easy. broad entertainment is often dismissed and then surges back when someone dares to admit it was popular for a reason.

Slapstick? ace ventura and dumb & dumber have tighter plots than most Oscar winners and high verbal IQ joke construction. The physical comedy is 1800000 because Jim Carrey is a hall of famer but the movies would be 180 just based on dialogue

Naked Gun, Police Academy movies were doing that style in the 80s. But Jim Carrey was just a much bigger star.

few factors imo and it starts with bill cosby

his early work was tailored to black audiences, but the cosby show blew the roof off the entertainment industry.

this brought about a rush of white-black buddy movies, black family sitcoms, etc... all aimed at white audiences

at the same time, the door was opened for black comedies aimed at blacks. "in living color" was a prime example. These black entertainment for black people shows had very visceral and gutter humor. Jim Carrey starting here allowed him to really develop all his gross shit.

After that, JC was just a force. Much of the stuff youre talking about only came about bc JC just willed it into being. And it paid wildly, as he was accessing prole consumers that were not being catered to.

Because of him the Farrelly brothers could do there thing, American Pie universe happened, etc etc.

A spate of toilet humor, physical comedy... but its roots were really the introduction of black people comedy that came in the wake of cosby
